Firstly, thanks for your post on getting sound to work in Gutsy. I was about to give up and downgrade until I found your article and heard the music.
And a problem you might be able to help me with- I have the same computer as you, HP Pavillion dv6500, and was wondering if you could tell me what your Screens and Graphics Preferences are set too (System>Administration>Screens and Graphics).
I was messing around with projectors and am having trouble finding the original settings..

If you also have a Nvidia graphics card, I’ve found that the Screen and Graphics tool does not work correctly with the Nvidia driver. It’s better to use gksudo nvidia-settings
Make sure to save the settings to the X configuration file so they stick.
My resolution is 1280×800 @ 60Hz if that helps any. 😉
